Welcome to Bluesky

A lot has happened since I last wrote — for instance, I was laid off. But I’ve been at my new company for about a year now and finally getting the spoons back to do some side projects. One of those projects — in-part prompted by the recent election results — is to join Bluesky.

Migrating to a Self-Hosted Bluesky PDS

PDS stands for “Personal Data Server” — it’s Bluesky’s way of hosting all of my data on my own hardware and not on theirs. It was pretty straightforward — followed the directions in the README, configured some DNS, and made it to send mail with my mail provider. The only real hiccup was getting the UI to change my handle to @heymrbass.com, and I was able to do that by using the goat tool.

Next steps are to migrate followers (from both Twitter and Mastodon) and see if responsiveness is actually an issue on mobile or if that was just because I was setting things up.
